Pikes Peak Cog Railway & Garden of the Gods

About this experience

This is a private tour: just your group, up to 6 people, with a private guide and round-trip transport in a luxury Suburban, per the listing. The itinerary gives the pickup as 1701 Wynkoop St in Denver, and GetYourGuide shows the pickup details when you check availability. The day runs about 10 hours, with about 1.5 to 2 hours of driving each way to the Pikes Peak region.

The heart of it is the cog railway up Pikes Peak and back, about 3 hours round trip on the rails, per the itinerary. The railway calls itself the world's highest cog railroad, and it climbs about 9 miles from Manitou Springs at 6,320 feet to the summit at 14,115 feet, with about 40 minutes at the top and the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center. Around the train ride, you get about 1.5 hours in the Garden of the Gods among the red rock spires and about 1.5 hours in Manitou Springs for lunch and the shops. Your guide fits the stops around your train time.

Included, per the listing: the private Suburban, the guide, the Cog Railway tickets, snacks and drinks, and a daypack with water, snacks and blankets to take on the train. Not included: meals, personal expenses and gratuity. The listing marks the tour as not suitable for wheelchair users or people with altitude sickness. A friendly tip: use the restroom at the depot before you board, as the Cog Railway says there are none on the trains.

Tips before you book

  • The Cog Railway's own advice: lightheadedness can hit anyone at 14,115 feet, so drink plenty of water, skip hard exercise on your first day at altitude and bring a warm layer, as the summit can be 30 to 40 degrees colder.
  • The train does not turn around, per the Cog Railway: if you face forward going up, you ride backward coming down. Pick your side for the view on the way up.
  • The Cog runs year-round, but the railway says snow or severe weather can stop a train short of the summit. Bring comfortable shoes and warm clothing, as the listing asks.
  • The Cog Railway's schedule page says the aspens begin to turn in late September and run through mid-October. That is the prettiest window for the drive and the Garden of the Gods.
  • Want the background first? Our Pikes Peak Cog Railway guide covers the 2021 rebuild, the summit visitor center and winter running.
