Rocky Mountaineer alternatives

Canyon Spirit, the former Rocky Mountaineer route, is two or three days and priced to match. Here are the Colorado trains that give you the canyons, the domes or the steam for less time and money.

Plenty of people search for a cheaper alternative to the Rocky Mountaineer in Colorado. The honest answer is that nothing copies it exactly: Canyon Spirit, as the route is now called, is an all-inclusive journey with hotel nights. But its best parts can be had separately. The canyons are on a daily Amtrak train, the glass domes are on a two-hour ride from Cañon City, and Colorado's steam lines fill whole days.

For Canyon Spirit itself, read our Rocky Mountaineer in Colorado guide. This one covers the rest, with fares from the railroads' own pages and the tours you can book here.

The quick answer

The closest alternative is Amtrak's California Zephyr: it runs daily on much of the same line from Denver through the Moffat Tunnel and Glenwood Canyon, and travelers 65 and over get 10% off most fares. For luxury in an afternoon, the Royal Gorge Route's Vista Dome starts at $139 and First Class at $199. For steam, the Durango & Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec.

What is a cheaper alternative to the Rocky Mountaineer?

Amtrak's California Zephyr. It uses much of the same Denver to Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction line as Canyon Spirit, runs every day of the year, and is typically far cheaper.

What you give up: the all-inclusive service, the hotel and the Hosts. What you keep: the Moffat Tunnel, the canyons of the upper Colorado River and a lounge car with big windows. The Zephyr is a long-distance train from Chicago to Emeryville, California, so you simply ride the Colorado part.

If what you want is a dome car and a meal, the Royal Gorge Route does that in under two hours. If you want a full day on the rails, the steam lines in the south do it. All three are below.

Does the California Zephyr follow the same route as Canyon Spirit?

For much of the way, yes. Westbound from Denver it climbs through the Moffat Tunnel, then follows the Colorado River through Gore, Byers and Glenwood Canyons to Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction.

The Moffat Tunnel takes the line under the Continental Divide for 6.2 miles. On the far side the Zephyr stops at Fraser-Winter Park and Granby before the canyons. Amtrak's page names the Sightseer Lounge, with panoramic windows facing Gore, Byers and Glenwood Canyons.

On the current timetable the westbound train crosses the Colorado mountains by day, which is why people use it as a scenic day ride: Denver to Glenwood Springs, a night in town, then back. Check the times for your date on amtrak.com. One fun link: General Motors' Cyrus Osborn thought up the dome car after riding through Glenwood Canyon in 1944, per the Royal Gorge Route's car history page.

Are there senior discounts on train tickets in Colorado?

Amtrak gives travelers aged 65 and over 10% off most rail fares, though not on sleeping accommodation charges. Those 50% or 20% train discounts you may see are not standard Amtrak senior fares.

The Amtrak discount cannot be combined with other offers. Canyon Spirit's pages list no senior discount; its current promotion is $250 per person off eligible 2026 packages booked by 20 November 2026.

The heritage railroads price by class and season, with child fares on most. The Cog Railway, for example, starts at $67 for adults and $57 for children online, and the Royal Gorge Route at $109 and $104 in Coach. Booking online is cheaper on both: walk-up Cog tickets start at $86, and the Royal Gorge Route adds $10 per ticket at the depot.

Is the Royal Gorge Route a luxury alternative?

For an afternoon, yes. The Vista Dome starts at $139 per adult, and the First Class Lunch and Dinner trains cost $199 per person with three courses and a glass of sparkling wine.

The Royal Gorge Route owns four full-length dome cars, two Budd "Big Domes" and two Pullman "Superdomes", bought in 2005 and 2006 from Holland America Westours. The Vista Dome has booth seats up under the glass and is the railroad's top-rated class. It has 14 steps, so it is not wheelchair accessible. First Class runs on holidays, special events and select weekends, for teens and adults.

Every class can step out onto the open-air car, standing room only, with granite walls over 1,000 feet above. The GetYourGuide listing is from $148 with free cancellation up to 24 hours before; check the class shown for your date. Tristan, Sep 2026: "We went for our honeymoon! Which Colorado trains give you a full day on the rails?

The Durango & Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec. Both are narrow-gauge steam lines from the 1880s, and both run about seven to nine hours with lunch along the way.

The Durango & Silverton runs 45.4 miles each way along the Animas River. The summer round trip takes about 9.25 hours with a roughly two-hour layover in Silverton. 2026 fares started at $118 in a standard coach; First Class cars started at $226. In winter it runs 26 miles to Cascade Canyon, 5.25 hours from $97, and after flooding on the Animas River in October 2026, the railroad says it is on track to resume the Polar Express and Cascade Canyon trains on 20 November 2026.

The Cumbres & Toltec runs 64 miles from Antonito over Cumbres Pass at 10,015 feet to Chama, New Mexico, in about seven hours, with a buffet lunch at Osier in every class and a motorcoach back. Its season runs roughly late May to late October; 2027 tickets are due soon on the railroad's site.

Going to Durango? The Mesa Verde day tour makes a second day, with a ranger-guided visit to Cliff Palace.

Is the Winter Park Express a good winter train ride?

Yes, for skiers and anyone who wants the Moffat Tunnel in snow. It runs from Denver Union Station to Winter Park Resort from December, Thursday to Sunday, with fares from $19 for 2026-27.

The resort says the train leaves Denver about 7:00 am and starts back from Winter Park about 4:35 pm, about 2.5 hours each way, and runs through March or April. Skis and boards ride free as carry-on, and the drop-off is just west of the Moffat Tunnel, with lockers at the West Portal. Tickets are sold on amtrak.com, expected in November. Our winter train rides note has the other winter options.

Is the Pikes Peak Cog a good alternative?

For altitude rather than distance, yes. It is the world's highest cog railroad, its owners say, climbing about 9 miles to 14,115 feet in a round trip of about three hours.

It is the opposite of Canyon Spirit in almost every way: short, steep and high, with about 40 minutes at the summit and the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center at the top. Online tickets start at $67, per the Cog Railway's rates page.

The comfortable way to do it from Denver is the private Cog Railway tour: a luxury Suburban, a private guide, the Cog Railway tickets and a daypack with water, snacks and blankets for the train, then Manitou Springs and the Garden of the Gods. It is from $799 per group, 4.9 stars from 10 reviews, for up to 6 people.
